Many of us have heard about meditation and visualization. It’s the practice that allows us to find a space in which we can open ourselves up to our higher guidance system. But have you heard of Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is a word that describes what we are doing when we are in our awareness mode. Another way of saying it is; it is when we are living in the present moment.
We all have stressors in our lives. It is human nature to have stress enter our body and allow our minds to wonder down bunny holes of past and future scenarios that don’t turn out well.
When you have tools in your emotional tool belt, it helps us to flip our emotions into neutral and allows us to release the fear and move forward in a more positive light.
So what is this mindfulness tool all about? It is the EASIEST tool in my shed. It is done in just a few steps:
- Recognize that you are not in a good feeling place (fear or anxiety)
- Take 5 deep but gentle breaths
- Feel the breaths as they entire your body
- Notice how you feel after the 5th breath
- Notice you are now in the present moment; the only moment you
I would say that the step people find the most difficult is #1! It takes a bit of practice to notice that you are running right towards that bunny hole. To recognize that what you are saying to yourself does not feel good is the biggest step. It means that you are being more consciously aware of your thoughts and how they make you feel. You are out of the “auto-pilot” zone. Then doing the next steps is a piece of cake.
Feeling better no matter what is going on in your life is your dominant agenda. Taking a moment, and I mean literally a moment, to breath 5 times and feel the experience can shift you out of our current negative mental state. Sometimes it might take 10-20 breaths.
However long you chose the results will be a feeling and sense of relief. At times you might find that your breaths can sit and be in a new mode of being the observer of your situation. This allows you to see it all in a 3 party position. You can see it without all the emotional baggage that we take with us in our day.
Interesting isn’t it? If we spend more of our day breathing give space for appreciation. That is a perfect place to spend time everyday.
